Is therapy a good fit for me?

If you are visiting my site, you may be wondering if therapy is a good fit for you, and the answer is maybe! Therapy can be a valuable tool for many individuals and the reasons that people come to therapy can vary widely. Through this post, I will outline what therapy is, some of the reasons people seek therapy, and the benefits that therapy can provide.

What is therapy?

Therapy itself is a deeply personal endeavor. Therapy offers individuals an opportunity to share about themselves in a non-judgemental space. Therapy can be a tool where individuals can talk about relationships, changes in life, depression, anxiety, trauma, and other aspects of existence.  While in some moments, it may seem as though you are talking about your life experiences and how you feel, therapy will also tap into every aspect of who you are as a person; your values, hopes, fears,  and emotional experiences, are just a few things that you will delve into within the therapeutic process. Therapy is also a clinical process that utilizes your own goals for yourself as well as a guided treatment plan where your own progress can be measured.

Therapy is no easy task and sometimes the vulnerability that takes place during therapy can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable, and frankly a bit scary at times. Your therapist will work with you in these moments of vulnerability so that you feel safe exploring and expressing who you are. I always tell my clients that there is a chance that things might feel worse for a time before it starts to feel better. This is because you are exploring, discussing, and feeling things in therapy that you maybe have never had an opportunity to express with someone, and that can feel heavy.

Ultimately, therapy is an opportunity for individuals to express themselves, gather insight, treat mental health concerns, and most importantly, be heard and understood in a non-judgemental space.

Why do people seek out therapy?

There are endless reasons that individuals seek out therapy. While many individuals come to therapy for assistance understanding anxiety, depression, trauma, etc., you do not have to have a diagnosable mental health condition to seek therapy. Frequently, I see clients that are experiencing concerns in their relationship, career related concerns, issues with self-confidence and self-worth, stress management, and individuals seeking support through new phases of life. Therapy also offers an opportunity for people to feel heard and understood and to interact with someone who is a more objective presence.

Is therapy a good fit for me?

Deciding to pursue therapy is a deeply personal decision. Therapy requires vulnerability, authenticity, and a willingness to make yourself and your needs a priority. Therapy is not a passive process that occurs in your one hour a week with your therapist. Therapy requires active participation in the therapeutic session and in your day to day life. If you are looking for support and personal growth in your life, therapy might be a great option for you.

If you have questions about therapy and if it is a good fit for you, I would value the opportunity to explore that with you. I offer free 15 minute consultations to individuals that are considering seeking therapy and would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
